BURNINGMAN SETUP

useful tips for Burningman.

from a veteran (2013-23) burner

  • BEST TIP —-> Laminated Ticket packs.

  • Lighting - my favorite subject. Pros/Cons of different lighting options.

  • Wearing Soft Booties all week instead of my usual Blundstone Boots.

  • Upgraded solar panel & battery setup

  • Upgraded shower

  • Dustfree Coming-Home bag

LAMINATED TICKET PACK

By far the Best Burner Tip - laminated ticket packs. carry all your tickets (airline, Burningman Ticket Confirmation, Burner bus to/from Black Rock & Water passes) in one laminated pack with a brass rivet in the corner. protects your tickets so they won’t get damaged by the dust, wrinkles, tears, moisture from sweat or last year’s rain.

Burningman lighting

IF YOU GO TO BURNINGMAN YOU MUST WEAR LIGHTS ON YOUR BODY! IT IS IN A DRY LAKE BED SO THERE ARE NO LIGHTS FOR MILES. IT IS PITCH BLACK DARKNESS & YOU WILL DEFINITELY GET RUN OVER BY A SPEEDING EBIKE. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL AMBULANCES TAKING BLOODY PEOPLE AWAY & IT IS A PAINFUL 3 HOUR RIDE BACK TO RENO HOSPITAL.

my favorite subject - lighting. for burningman the challenge is to bring bright lighting that does NOT need batteries to replace. rechargeable flashlights & efficient lighting. if you have to replace batteries then you will need to carry out all the dead batteries that will all be corroded because they came in contact with the caustic playa dust. your battery stash will also be corroded by the week’s end unless you isolate each battery.

CLARIFICATION

i really like LED rope lights if they are a solid unit as i show in the video. the one to avoid is the Luminoodle brand LED rope light as i show the wiring is questionable & it has a switch which is a point of failure.

do not get the LED light strings with the thin copper wires (like fairy lights). the clear tube with the recharageable battery that i show failed because it is actually the fairy light copper wire inside of a clear plastic tube.

MISSING OTHER OPTIONS:

EL-Wire is also a good option, but bear in mind it just glows & doesn’t actually give off much light. it’s good to wrap your bike in but not good if you think you can use it to read in your tent.

CORRECTION : Luminoodle 20’ uses a 12 volt plug, no USB. (discontinued)

CLARIFICATION : I like LED light ropes like the one i demonstrated, i just don’t recommend the Luminoodle version which i showed as having a faulty wire. I don’t recommend LED light ropes that are a clear plastic tube with a copper wire “fairy lights” inside because of the fragile wiring.

EL Wire is another good alternative. The only reason i prefer LED Rope lights over EL Wire is LED Ropes give off ambient light. EL Wires glow but you can't use them to read or eat by.

slip-on Booties (instead of boots)

bm23-booties. tested out these booties this year & never put on my shoes. they worked great as long as you cleaned out the playa dust. otherwise it turned to mud inside & eventually tiny little rocks. easy to clean as you just wack them inside out against a pole.

upgraded solar & battery setup

2022 Solar Setup.

:: Goal Zero Sherpa 100ac

:: goal zero 8mm 30’ extension cord

:: Flexopower 40 watt solar panel

CORRECTION —>> 0.7 hours, not 7 hours. I didn’t see the tiny decimal point on the display

upgraded shower setup

2022 Shower setup

:: Goal Zero Sherpa 100ac

:: usb-c to Cigarette adapter

:: 12 volt shower - Shurflo 1 gal/minute rv pump + hoses, sprayer & connectors

// you don’t want any more than 1 gal/minute otherwise you will use up water at a faster rate & generate too much grey water.

coming home clothes bag

Coming home Sealed bag - dust-free clothes to wear on the plane ride home. i vacuum seal it so no dust gets in throughtout the week. i’ve tried several dry bags but the fine playa dust always finds its way into the clothes. this is guaranteed to be dust-free.

Shorts, t-shirt, underwear, socks, deodorant + 2 packs of Alcala body wipes. Clean up in the Reno Airport bathroom before you pass thru security. Lots of other Burners in the bathroom doing the same which makes for one last Burner experience.
